Manager and Sporting Director
PETER VERMES oversees all soccer operations for Sporting Kansas City, including head coaching duties, roster management, scouting and oversight of Sporting Kansas City II and Sporting KC Academy. He took the helm as manager in 2009 and served as the club’s technical director from 2006-2018.
Vermes is the longest-tenured head coach in MLS history and the sixth-longest tenured manager in global soccer according to the CIES Football Observatory. He is the fourth-winningest coach in MLS with 183 career regular season victories. During his successful tenure in Kansas City, Vermes has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup – and finished atop the conference standings in 2011, 2012, 2018 and 2020. He notably led Sporting to eight straight postseason appearances from 2011-2018 and remains the only person to ever win MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team.
In January 2019, Vermes won the inaugural MLS Sporting Executive of the Year award for his exemplary leadership, dedication and strategic vision in guiding Sporting to success. Under his guidance, Sporting also received 2018 MLS Academy of the Year accolades for exemplary player development.
