2016 Copa América Centenario schedule released

The organizing committee for the 2016 Copa America Centenario announced yesterday the schedule for next summer’s historic tournament. The once-in-a-lifetime event, featuring the top national teams from South America, North America and the Caribbean, will be held in 10 venues across the United States.


The United States Men’s National Team is the No. 1 seed in Group A and will play matches at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California (June 3), Soldier Field in Chicago (June 7) and Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia (June 11). Brazil, Mexico and Argentina are the top seeds in Groups B, C and D, respectively.


Fourteen teams have qualified for the tournament including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and United States. The remaining two slots will be determined by one-game playoff matches held on January 8 in Panama City, Panama. Cuba will play host Panama while Trinidad and Tobago will play Haiti. The two winners will advance to next summer’s tournament.


Tickets for Copa America matches will go on sale to the general public in early February. Sporting Kansas City Season Ticket Members will have access to an exclusive presale window in January. More details on the presale will be announced in the coming weeks.


Two current Sporting KC players have previously played in a Copa America tournament. Midfielders Benny Feilhaber and Justin Mapp played in the 2007 tournament against Argentina, Paraguay and Colombia.
