Swope Soccer Village and the Sporting Kansas City Academy are hosting 2017-18 Generation adidas Cup West Region qualifying matches this weekend, showcasing Major League Soccer's best youth talent from the U-15 and U-17 levels. Matchday one unfolded Friday with six U-17 clubs playing their first qualifiers, while the U-15 age group completed its first set of friendlies.
The second and third matchdays will take place Saturday and Monday at Swope Soccer Village, and all games are free and open to the public. Follow @SKCAcademy on Twitter for live updates throughout the weekend.
Portland Timbers 3, LA Galaxy 1
The Portland Timbers U-17s kicked off the afternoon with a comeback victory, erasing an early deficit to defeat the LA Galaxy U-17s by a 3-1 scoreline. Lucas Gonzalez fired LA into the lead in the 25th minute, but Portland responded with two goals in as many minutes just before halftime, drawing level on an own goal from Leonardo Sepulveda and surging ahead on a close-range strike from Josh Darius. Rian Jamai doubled the Timbers' advantage on the hour mark, effectively securing all three points.

Real Salt Lake Under-17s began their Generation adidas Cup play in convincing fashion, routing the San Jose Earthquakes Under-17s 5-0 in the second match of the day at Swope Soccer Village. RSL dominated from the off and got the goal their play deserved in the 22nd minute when Julian Vazquez tucked home Luis Arriaga's precise cross. Vazquez added his second goal of the game early in the second period when he escaped behind the San Jose defense to finish cooly. Substitute Athis Mezine added the third and fourth goals in the 73rd and 79th minutes, respectively, before fellow substitute Casey Lambert tapped home at the far post to complete the victory in stoppage time.

Sporting Kansas City Under-17s picked up two points from their Generation adidas Cup opener against Seattle Sounders FC Under-17s after winning 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw. After a tight first half, Seattle took the lead within seconds of the start of the second period as Ray Serrano tapped home Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez's cross from close range. Sporting KC responded with Gabe Ramos heading home a brilliant volleyed cross from Kaveh Rad in the 48th minute and took the lead in the 73rd when substitute Brandt Betts carried the ball forward and fed Gabe Findley who curled a stunning finish into the side-netting to make the score 2-1. The lead would only last a minute as Serrano headed home his second of the game for Seattle to make the final score 2-2. The game went to penalty kicks where Gianluca Busio, Tyler Freeman, Brandt Betts and Jahon Rad all converted as Maxi Trejo made stops on Ocampo-Chavez and Daniel Leyva to win the shootout 4-3, giving Sporting KC two points and the Sounders one heading into the second matchday.
