Sporting Kansas City midfielder Erik Thommy and forward Alan Pulido were named to the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi on Thursday as two of the top 11 players in Major League Soccer for Matchday 33 of the regular season.
Pulido and Thommy each scored twice in Sporting's 4-1 rout of the Colorao Rapids on Wednesday at Children's Mercy Park, becoming the first SKC teammates in over five years -- since Krisztian Nemeth and Felipe Gutierrez on April 27, 2019 -- to score multiple goals in an MLS regular season match.
Pulido opened the scoring in the eighth minute on Wednesday and doubled Sporting's lead in the 49th minute, giving the World Cup veteran five goal contributions in his last five MLS matches. The Designated Player now has seven multi-goal matches in his SKC career, tying Johnny Russell and Preki for third most in club history.
Thommy came off the bench to replace Pulido in the second half and struck twice - once with his right foot in the 69th minute and once with his left in the 82nd minute -- to write his name into the club record books as only the fifth player in team history, and the first in 17 years, to score multiple goals in an MLS regular season match as a substitute.
"There's no doubt that Alan has this kind of level in him. He's had great form for probably the last two months," Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes said postgame. "Thommy is like a missile. He's a direct guy. So you bring him on and all of a sudden he gets it and we're going."
With victories in three straight home matches across all competitions, Sporting Kansas City will look to continue the winning ways on Saturday when regional rival Minnesota United FC visits Children’s Mercy Park for a 7:30 p.m. CT kickoff. Tickets for the Western Conference clash are available at SeatGeek.com with live broadcasts on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV, Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.
