Sporting Kansas City defender Matt Besler and his wife Amanda welcomed their first baby to the World on Friday morning. A few hours later, Besler scored his first international goal in the USMNT 6-0 victory over St. Vincent and the Grenadines. That's definitely one for the baby book.
Besler was with the national team in St. Vincent and the Grenadines when his wife called to let him know she was going into labor. Besler looked into travel arrangements to get home in time for the birth of his first child, but the quickest he could make it back to the United States was via a boat ride and two flights and that wouldn't land him in Kansas City until Saturday morning.
So, Besler suited up for his country as he had 36 times before, but this time with his nation and his newborn daughter on his mind. Thirty-two minutes into the match, the USMNT lined up for a free-kick 35-yards out and it was Sporting KC teammate Graham Zusi who stood behind the kick. Zusi sent the ball towards the back post and an errant clearance landed right in the path of Besler who calmly beat the keeper to the near post.
Besler and his teammates celebrated by rocking the cradle, of course. Hashtag, #precious.
With the USMNT on the brink of a spot in the final round of World Cup qualifying, Besler will now return to Kansas City to be with his wife and newborn daughter Parker.
