Brad Davis has built a heralded MLS career as an elite provider of goals. He ranks third on the league's all-time assist chart and has spent the last 15 seasons setting up teammates through the run of play and off set pieces.
A high-profile acquisition ahead of the 2016 season, Davis is returning to his creative best in Sporting Kansas City colors. Three days after notching his first assist for the club in a 2-2 draw at FC Dallas, Davis delivered an excellent performance Tuesday as Sporting KC opened its Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League campaign with a 2-2 result at Central FC in Trinidad and Tobago.
Davis was only credited for one assist in the match — an incisive through ball to Kevin Ellis in the 70th minute — but he also set up Seth Sinovic's 51st-minute opener with a lofted pass to the far post. In addition to manufacturing both goals, the Missouri native put two of four shots on goal and crafted numerous chances in the attacking third as Sporting Kansas City dominated the final half hour.
CONCACAF tabbed Davis to its Champions League Best XI for Week 2 on Friday, including him in a three-man midfield alongside Deportivo Saprissa duo Mariano Torres and Marvin Angulo.
Sporting Kansas City will continue their Champions League quest with a pivotal road test at Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Tuesday. Kickoff at BC Place is set for 9 p.m. CT and the game will stream live on CONCACAF's official Facebook page.
