German giants FC Bayern earned a 1-0 win over Italian side AC Milan before a sold-out crowd of 18,469 on Tuesday night at Children's Mercy Park.
The International Champions Cup encounter was decided on the stroke of halftime when midfielder Leon Goretzka settled a pass from fellow German international Joshua Kimmich and slotted low into the corner for the match-winner.
Tuesday's entertaining spectacle featured a bevy of world-class stars, including FIFA World Cup winners Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller for FC Bayern and prodigal Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for AC Milan.
The ICC matchup was the eighth international club friendly in Children's Mercy Park history, and the first since the heralded venue hosted Mexican rivals Pachuca and Santos Laguna in 2016. AC Milan became the second Italian outfit to visit the stadium, following 2013 MLS All-Star Game guest AS Roma, while FC Bayern were the first German club to do so.
The sellout comes on the heels of an electric Concacaf Gold Cup battle between the United States and Panama that took place at Children's Mercy Park on June 26. The U.S. claimed a 1-0 win to finish atop Group D before taking second place at the tournament.
Since opening in June 2011, Children's Mercy Park has welcomed the U.S. Men’s National Team six times, the U.S. Women’s National Team four times and hosted eight high-profile international friendlies.
