College Invitational Combine Day 2: Ethan Bartlow and Adrian Billhardt score game-winners

College Invitational Combine action shot 1 - Nov. 13, 2020

The 2020 College Invitational Combine continued Saturday with the second doubleheader of a three-day event at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri, featuring the country's best college soccer players divided into four teams named after Sporting Legends.

The early stages of the opening contest between Team Hunt and Team Conrad saw Syracuse senior forward Luther Archimede nearly score for the second straight day, but his side-footed effort on the breakaway fizzed inches wide of Connecticut College goalkeeper A.J. Marcucci’s left-hand post in the 16th minute.

Team Hunt were rewarded for their strong start in the 28th minute, scoring the game’s lone goal on an emphatic header from University of Washington center back Ethan Bartlow off a corner kick. Only a minute later, Marcucci made a strong save at his near post to deny Archimede.

In the 58th minute, Cal-Berkeley senior Thomas Williamson and Cal State Northridge senior Daniel Trejo combined neatly inside the box for Team Hunt, but Trejo’s shot near the penalty spot was blocked through traffic. At the opposite end, Team Conrad threatened on 76 minutes when Michigan State forward Farai Mutatu squared the ball to Loyola Chicago midfielder Justin Sukow, whose blistering effort at the top of the box was corralled by Saint Louis University goalkeeper Patrick Schulte to preserve the Team Hunt clean sheet victory.

Team Gansler wasted no time seizing control in the second game of the afternoon and came away with a 1-0 triumph of their own. Sporting Kansas City Academy product and Drake University forward Leroy Enzugusi almost opened the scoring for Team Gansler in the ninth minute, prompting an excellent save from Michigan goalkeeper Owen Finnerty. Less than three minutes later, Finnerty was busy again and managed to thwart Denver forward Preston Judge at close range.

Adrian Billhardt, a senior midfielder out of South Florida, decided the contest in the 14th minute, racing onto a Team Conrad turnover and unleashing a right-footed shot low into the corner.

Team Johnston gradually gained a foothold and carved out their first big opening in the 29th minute when Team Gansler and University of Denver goalkeeper Will Palmquist produced a good save to turn away South Florida's Avionne Flanagan. Team Johnston's best opportunity to level terms came five minutes into the second half, as Maryland senior Sunkyu Bin dashed down the left channel and served a pinpoint cross to Georgetown forward Derek Dodson, whose first-time effort slammed over the crossbar by the slimmest of margins.

The 2020 College Invitational Combine serves as a new player identification platform for clubs in Major League Soccer and the United Soccer League ahead of the 2021 season. Technical staff members and scouts representing MLS and USL clubs across the United States and Canada are in attendance for the inaugural event.
