Children’s Mercy Park was one of several Kansas City landmarks to light up in amber tonight during a National Day of Remembrance honoring frontline workers and remembering those lost to COVID-19.
As part of today’s nationwide COVID-19 Memorial, Kansas City’s National World War I Museum and Memorial raised 1,665 white flags, representing every life lost in the city due to the pandemic.
At 4:30 p.m. CT, U.S. President-Elect Joe Biden participated in a ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. On the Lincoln Memorial lawn, hundreds of flags were dedicated to individuals who died from COVID-19 as citizens throughout the nation took part in a moment of unity and remembrance.
The U.S. capital was joined by cities across the country to light up their buildings in an amber color, with Kansas City supporting the initiative at locations such as Downtown, City Hall, Union Station and Children’s Mercy Park, the world-class home of Sporting Kansas City.
The white flags at the National World War I Museum and Memorial—located at 2 Memorial Dr. in Kansas City, Missouri—will be displayed through Sunday, Jan. 24, and all community members are invited to visit the spectacle.
