Five years ago today, Sporting Kansas City forward delivered one of the best performances of his impressive debut season in MLS.
On May 20, 2015, in a nationally televised Wednesday night clash at Children's Mercy Park, Nemeth spearheaded a thrilling 4-2 victory over the New England Revolution with a goal on either side of halftime.
The visiting Revolution, having advanced to the MLS Cup the previous December, began brightly and took a 1-0 lead after 11 minutes when Juan Agudelo finished off a feed from Kelyn Rowe. The ominous start was hardly a harbinger of things to come, however, and Sporting responded with a vengeance at the half-hour mark.
A superb Dom Dwyer goal leveled terms in the 29th minute before Nemeth made his mark 10 minutes later on an assist from Benny Feilhaber. Two minutes before halftime, Feilhaber's successful penalty kick put the hosts in firm command.
Less than 60 seconds into the second half, Nemeth beat the New England backline once more to record his first career MLS brace and extend Sporting's advantage to 4-1. Scott Caldwell's goal in the 64th minute proved inconsequential as Manager Peter Vermes' men rode out as comfortable victors.
Nemeth, Dwyer and Feilhaber—the goal scorers that evening—would go on to play instrumental roles in Sporting's march to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title later that season. Nemeth and Dwyer finished atop the tournament's scoring chart with five goals apiece, while Feilhaber tallied a tournament-best five assists.
