Sixteen years ago today, the Kansas City Wizards captured another victory that typified their resolute 2004 campaign.
In a showdown against the Dallas Burn at Arrowhead Stadium, Josh Wolff assisted Jack Jewsbury's go-ahead goal on the hour mark before finding the back of the net himself in the 67th minute. On the opposite end of the pitch, goalkeeper Tony Meola made four saves as lynchpin defenders Jimmy Conrad and Nick Garcia anchored the backline.
The end result? A 2-0 triumph that served as one of Kansas City's 15 shutout wins that season in all competitions.
The 2004 season remains one of the most successful in club history, as the Wizards won their first Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title and suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to D.C. United in the MLS Cup. Led by Meola, Garcia and Conrad, Kansas City allowed a league-low 30 goals during the regular season and conceded just once in their four-game Open Cup run.
As for Wolff, he led the side with 10 regular season goals that year while adding seven assists. Jewsbury, a second-year midfielder at the time, broke out in 2004 and provided one of the club's best-ever postseason moments, bagging the winning goal in stoppage time of the conference semifinal second leg against the San Jose Earthquakes.
