On This Day: Sporting unveils UMB Sporting Legends Pylons at Children's Mercy Park in 2017

With the 2020 MLS season on temporary hold, SportingKC.com is taking daily strolls down memory lane with an "On This Day" web series that celebrates memorable moments in team history. As one of Major League Soccer's proud charter members, Sporting has a decorated past full of thrilling victories, amazing goals, momentous off-the-field developments and more. "On This Day" pays tribute to these specific instances, turning back the clocks while treating fans to nostalgia and club history lessons. Three years ago today, Sporting Kansas City and UMB Bank unveiled a series of commemorative UMB Sporting Legends Pylons that pay tribute to current members of the Sporting Legends hall of honor.

Located inside the UMB Premium Entry on the northwest side of Children’s Mercy Park, each pylon is dedicated to a Sporting Legend, detailing the player’s career accomplishments and accolades with the club and his country. All pylons also include a historic artifact donated by a Sporting Legend.

Children's Mercy Park currently boasts 10 of these pylons—one for every Sporting Legend. The first nine were erected in May 2017 ahead of Mo Johnston's induction into the hall of honor. The 10th was inaugurated last summer when former striker Josh Wolff became the newest Sporting Legend. With the company of Sporting Legends slated to grow in the coming years, pylons will continue to be placed in other prominent locations inside the stadium.
