The news spread quickly on Monday evening and sent ripples through the American soccer community. Sporting KC forward Dom Dwyer and his wife, FC Kansas City striker Sydney Leroux Dwyer, announced via Twitter that the couple is expecting their first child.
Dwyer and Leroux's baby is due in September. Leroux will miss the 2016 NWSL season as well as the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, should the U.S. Women’s National Team qualify.
Dwyer and Leroux announced their marriage last year on Valentine’s Day. The couple was wed in a private ceremony just weeks earlier and held a ceremony in Kansas City for family and friends last October. A photo of Dwyer and his Sporting KC teammates along with Leroux and her USWNT teammates won an #MLSSoshies award in the #BFFS category.
Dwyer is entering his fifth year with Sporting Kansas City. The England-born striker has won Sporting KC’s Golden Boot the past two years and finished with 17 goals in all competitions in 2016. Dwyer’s 36 regular season goals rank sixth in club history.
