Generation adidas Cup Day Two Recap

SKC Academy U-16 Generation Adidas Cup Huddle

The 2015/16 Generation adidas Cup Central Region Fall Event continued on Saturday with three matches at Swope Soccer Village. The Sporting KC U-18s, Chicago Fire U-16s and FC Dallas U-16s all earned wins during a matchday that featured 15 goals across the three games.

The Sporting KC U-18s opened the day with a 4-1 win over the Columbus Crew SC U-16s. Fernando Borges and Chase Bromstedt each tallied in the first half to give the home side a 2-0 lead at the break. Joe Corner and Felipe Hernandez scored in the second half to seal the match. Crew SC’s lone goal came off the foot of Mohamed Abusaiid. The Sporting KC U-18s are now 1-1-0 on the weekend while Crew SC U-16s fall to 0-2-0 following Friday’s loss to FC Dallas.

While Sporting KC scored early and often to put the first match of the day out of reach, the second match of the tripleheader between the Chicago Fire and Houston Dynamo U-16s could not have been closer. Ronaldo Gonzalez gave Houston a lead in the 14th minute with his second goal of the tournament. Michael Silvar leveled the match with the penalty kick for the Fire in the 37th minute, before Gonzalez tallied his second goal of the day - and third of the tournament - with a penalty kick only two minutes later.

As the clock wound down, the Dynamo looked assured of their first win of the tournament after falling to the Sporting KC U-16s on Friday. Silver had other plans, however, as the Fire midfielder leveled the match with his second penalty kick in the 80th minute. After several stoppages of play in the second half, seven minutes of stoppage time were put on the clock. That proved just enough for the Fire to earn a game-winner as Anthony Markanich scored in the seventh minute of stoppage time to give the Fire their second win of the tournament.

Saturday’s finale was a marquee matchup between the top two teams in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-15/16 Frontier Division. FC Dallas U-16s got off to a strong start against the Sporting KC U-16s as Jommar Reyes gave the visitors a halftime lead with his 31st-minute goal past Alex Brown. Sporting KC responded in the 51st minute as Colin Innes finished off a strong combination play in Dallas penalty box. Dallas wasted little time responding as Daniel Evans cleaned up a rebound in the 56h minute to give the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. Jesus Ferreira, son of former MLS MVP David Ferreira, scored in the 71st minute while Paxton Pomykal scored his second goal of the tournament in the 78th minute.

After two matches, FC Dallas and Chicago Fire lead the group with six points and a +7 and +3 goal differential, respectively. The Sporting KC U-16s have three points through two matches while Columbus and Houston have yet to earn a victory. All six teams will be in action on Monday on the Championship Field at Swope Soccer Village. Click here for full tournament details.
