He may have been denied credit for Sporting Kansas City's opening goal in a 3-0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday night, but there was no denying Gerso Fernandes a spot on the MLS Team of the Week.
Gerso was named among Week 19's best players after tallying a goal and an assist in Saturday's victory at BC Place. He set up Felipe Gutierrez's strike in the 56th minute to double Sporting's lead and added a late strike of his own in the 90th minute, sealing a man-of-the-match performance in British Columbia.
The diminutive winger could have boasted two goals to his name, but Gerso's low drive in the 24th minute was ultimately recorded as an own goal from Vancouver defender Ali Adnan.
In addition to playing a part in all three goals, Gerso completed 38 of 39 passes and won six duels. His contributions proved pivotal for a Sporting side that claimed its second straight shutout win and moved within four points of playoff positioning in the Western Conference.
Gerso and Sporting will battle for a third consecutive victory on Saturday when they host FC Dallas at 7:30 p.m. CT. Tickets for the match at Children's Mercy Park are available at SeatGeek.com.
