Johnny Russell up for MLS Goal of the Week

Sporting Kansas City forward Johnny Russell and the entire Sporting Kansas City squad’s game-winning goal in the 79th minute of Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Seattle Sounders is one of four nominees for AT&T MLS Goal of the Week.

Russell’s perfectly placed skipper past Stefan Frei, which capped off a 38-pass sequence and secured the win for Sporting KC, is up against goals from LA Galaxy’s Sebastian Lletget, Toronto FC’s Jozy Altidore and San Jose Earthquakes’ Benji Kikanovic. Fans can cast their vote in the Twitter poll below between now and Friday.

Russell who has 12 goals and seven assists this year, is tied for ninth in total goal contributions in the league. Russell is the second-leading scorer on SKC and is second in assists.

That game-winning goal extends his scoring streak to seven consecutive regular season matches, the longest scoring streak in club history and the longest in MLS this year.

With 37 career MLS regular season goals, Russell is now tied with former Colorado Rapids forward John Spencer for most goals by a Scottish player in league history.
