Major League soccer is officially the most diverse league in North America, MLSsoccer.com reported on Tuesday.
With players from 67 different countries represented on 2017 opening day rosters, MLS is the continent’s most diverse league by birthplace.
The United States, not surprisingly, is the most represented country with 288 Americans across the league. Canada is a distant second with 28 players, followed closely by Argentina (24), English (22) and Ghana (16) to round out the top five birth countries of MLS players.
Within the United States, the state of California is the country’s biggest producer of pros, with 61 current players hailing from the Golden State. That’s a sizeable amount more than runners-up Texas (26), third-place New York (18), fourth-place New Jersey (17) and fifth-place Ohio (16). Despite being the third-largest state in the U.S. by population, Florida is home to just eight current players. Ontario leads the way in Canada, home to 16 of the country’s 28 MLS players.
Major League Soccer also boasts a strong contingent of talent from Latin America and Spain, comprised of 115 total players. Argentina (24) leads Brazil (14), Colombia (13), Costa Rica (13) and Honduras (10).
