Sporting Kansas City forward Daniel Salloi was named to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week bench today after firing his side to a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls in an exciting 2021 season opener at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.
Salloi and Sporting turned the game on its head near the hour mark, transforming a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead with goals in back-to-back minutes. Just over 60 seconds after Gadi Kinda drew Sporting level from the penalty spot, Salloi latched onto Khiry Shelton's low cross to bag what would stand as the match-winner.
Salloi tallied his first goal for Sporting since September 2019 on the play—a significant development that could ignite the 24-year-old's scoring form in the early stages of 2021. The goal also gave Salloi his seventh career game-winner in the regular season, good for ninth-most in Sporting history.
With a momentous Week 1 triumph under their belts, Salloi and Sporting will now return to Children’s Mercy Park for the club’s highly anticipated home opener on Friday against Orlando City SC at 6:30 p.m. CT. The sold-out encounter will be shown nationally on FS1, FOX Deportes and the FOX Sports app. Listeners can also follow the action on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.
