Goalkeeper Tim Melia delivered arguably the best performance of his seven-year MLS career on Saturday, making six saves -- including one from the penalty spot -- to propel Sporting Kansas City to a 2-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls.
Melia's heroics between the posts landed him a Team of the Week spot on MLSsoccer.com and Bleacher Report. The 2015 Comeback Player of the Year has started 2016 in fine form, leading MLS in wins (four), shutouts (three), save percentage (87.5) and goals against average (0.60). On Saturday, he became the first goalkeeper in Sporting KC history to record at least six saves, one penalty kick save and a shutout win in the same match.
Joining Melia on Bleacher Report's team of the week was forward Dom Dwyer, who tallied his second game-winning assist of 2016 before adding a goal of his own in the 60th minute. Dwyer is one of five MLS players with at least three goals and two assists through Week 6.
It's a quick turnaround this week for first-place Sporting Kansas City, who will host the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. CT for the club's highly anticipated 20th Anniversary Night, presented by Ivy Funds. A limited number of tickets to the retro-themed match at Children's Mercy Park are available at Ticketmaster.com, including South Stand GA tickets for just $19.96 using the promo code WIZ1996 at checkout.
