Center back Matt Besler and striker Diego Rubio played key roles in Saturday's 2-0 win over FC Dallas as Sporting Kansas City remained tied atop the Western Conference. Besler anchored another resolute defensive effort en route to the team's MLS-best 10th shutout of 2017, while Rubio buried a superb volley to tally his third goal since the start of July. Both players appeared on Sports Radio 810 WHB this week to discuss Sporting Kansas City's victory along with several off-the-field topics.
Speaking with hosts Nate Bukaty, Carter Augustine and Jillian Carroll on the Sporting KC Show, Rubio briefly touched on the team's success before explaining how Kansas City has quickly become a special place to his family over the last year. He also discussed his affinity for cooking, growing up with a soccer-obsessed family in Chile, coming back from a torn ACL he suffered last October, and stepping up as a starter in the wake of Dom Dwyer's departure.
Besler joined Bukaty and Steven St. John on the Border Patrol this morning, rehashing Monday's solar eclipse and lauding Sporting Kansas City's fan base for 100 straight MLS sellouts at Children's Mercy Park. Besler also shared a story that illustrates just how far the club has come over the last decade, recalling a time when he had to use a portable restroom at CommunityAmerica Ballpark as a rookie in 2009.
