Sporting Kansas City defender Matt Besler was in an unfamiliar place during Saturday's epic 3-2 comeback victory over the Houston Dynamo at Children's Mercy Park.
Rather than anchoring Sporting KC's backline as the club's captain in central defense, Besler was stationed in a Children's Mercy Park broadcast booth, watching the game unfold from high above as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
Besler reflected on Saturday's wild encounter when he made his customary appearance on Sports Radio 810 WHB this morning, joining hosts Nate Bukaty, Steven St. John and Jake Gutierrez.
"It's such a special stadium, and there are a couple times each season where something crazy like this happens," Besler said of the 3-2 thriller, which saw Sporting KC overcome a two-goal deficit at halftime. "To sit back and enjoy it was amazing. It was a huge, huge result for us after what happened in the first half. Statistically we probably didn't have a very good chance at winning that game, but with two goals in the last five minutes, it was a really big night for us. Everyone's still buzzing from that one."
Besler looks forward to rejoining the side in the near term but knows that coming back prematurely from a hamstring injury might lead to an even lengthier spell on the sideline.
"That's part of sports. It teaches you patience, but hopefully I can be out there as soon as possible. Because it's not as fun watching. Sometimes you're more nervous watching than playing because you're able to process things."
The Kansas City native also chatted about the 2018 FIFA World Cup, speaking about the likes of Lionel Messi and Argentina, a host of teams who have started strongly, and the ultra-competitive World Cup pool he has started with his teammates.
