Sporting Kansas City captain and defender Matt Besler joined Sports Radio 810 WHB on Tuesday morning for his customary chat with The Border Patrol hosts Nate Bukaty and Steven St. John. And with Sporting KC embarking on a two-game road trip this week, discussion revolved around Wednesday's showdown with Real Salt Lake in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round.
Besler is approaching the matchup with plenty of excitement, as Sporting KC will look to continue their Open Cup mastery after winning the tournament championship in 2012, 2015 and 2017. Wednesday's game also raises the distinct possibility that Besler will face his younger brother, 25-year-old Nick, for the first time in his professional career. Nick Besler joined MLS in 2015 and earned his league debut for RSL early this season. He has appeared in each of RSL's last eight games, during which time the Claret and Cobalt have gone 5-3-0 and risen to third in the Western Conference standings.
Listen to the full podcast below as Besler reflects on his brother's improvements as a player and the idea of going head-to-head with him on Wednesday night.
Kickoff is slated for 9 p.m. CT Wednesday at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, with a live stream available via ussoccer.com. All Sporting KC fans are invited to the game's official watch party at No Other Pub in the Kansas City Power & Light District, featuring $4 Bud Light drafts, $5 Corona cans and $6 Till Vodka cocktails.
