Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza was named to the Concacaf Champions League Team of the Week for matchday two today after helping his side to a dominant 2-0 win over Deportivo Toluca FC on Thursday night at Estadio Nemesio Diez in Toluca, Mexico.
Espinoza's glorious diagonal ball over the top set Gerso Fernandes free for the game-winner in the eight minute, but the Honduran veteran was far from done making a distinct impact on proceedings. He was a two-way cog in Sporting's midfield as the visitors bossed possession and nullified a Toluca attack that failed to register a single shot on target.
Sporting has advanced to the quarterfinal stage of the Concacaf Champions League for the second time after claiming a remarkable 5-0 aggregate victory over Toluca in the Round of 16. The result made Sporting the first American club in the 57-year history of the Champions League to defeat a Mexican club in a two-legged series with the second leg played in Mexico. It also marked the largest margin of victory by an MLS team over a Liga MX opponent in a two-legged series.
Single-game tickets for the second leg of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Quarterfinals between Sporting Kansas City and Panamanian club Independiente are now on sale at SeatGeek.com.
