Last week, MLS clubs from around the league rolled up their sleeves in honor of Earth Day. This was the first year for the MLS WORKS #GreenerGoals Week of Service. The MLS WORKS Greener Goals initiative helps identify ways to reduce the League’s carbon footprint and raise awareness about environmental issues throughout the soccer community.
Sporting Club participated in two separate events during the week.
The 3rd annual Recycle Your Game new and gently-used soccer equipment drive was held throughout the month of April during all Swope Park Rangers and Sporting Kansas City home games at Children’s Mercy Park. Following the drives a distribution clinic was held for 75 local kids from Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mattie Rhodes and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater KC. Each participant took home a pair of cleats and a new soccer ball. They also participated in an hour-long clinic led by the Sporting Club Network and select players from both Sporting KC and the Swope Park Rangers.
On Friday, the Sporting KC and Swope Park Rangers front office staff spent the day helping remove shrub honeysuckle from the Swope Park Dog Park. The invasive species canopies the ground and doesn’t allow anything else to grow. Swope Park is the home to both the Sporting KC training facility and the Swope Park Rangers so helping keep the park in good condition is a priority of the organization.
