Five MLS games were postponed on Wednesday as MLS players decided to sit out their games, joining other professional athletes protesting the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
It all started in the NBA when the Milwaukee Bucks didn't take the floor for their scheduled NBA playoff game on Thursday afternoon and many followed across the American sports world as players continue to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes has since had a discussion with his players over last night's events and much more, assuring his players know they have the full support of the coaching staff.
“We’ve met with the players over all the issues going on," Vermes told reporters on a video conference call on Thursday. "These issues concerning our country have to be dealt with, (we want them to know) we understand that. We’ve listened to players. We listen to staff, we’re incredibly supportive.”
Sporting played on Tuesday night, falling 5-2 to the Houston Dynamo.
“I have to commend the guys, they’re pursuing excellence in two areas," Vermes said. "They’re trying to be the best on the field and the second is off the field. They’d like to see change. I support that. I agree with it.”
Sporting is next scheduled to play on Saturday against the Colorado Rapids. Vermes said he tries not to spend time speculating on what might happen, but his staff is preparing as if the team will play. He adds that there have been talks within the squad about playing or not.
“We all want to be able to do our profession...but at the same time, there’s a real need for change," Vermes said. "Frankly, it’s unacceptable in our society. Unfortunately, these are the things now that have to be done to garner support and attention.”
