Sporting KC Academy product Zach Wright advances to Quarterfinals of NCAA D1 Men's Soccer Tournament

Zach Wright - Nov. 30

One Sporting KC Academy product remains in the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament following the Third Round. Zach Wright and his North Carolina side advanced to the Quarterfinals on Sunday, while Bryce Gibson (Creighton) and Ryan Krutz (Notre Dame) each saw their quest for a berth in College Cup come to an end with defeat over the weekend.

Sophomore Zach Wright played 75 minutes in North Carolina’s 1-0 upset victory over eighth-seed Syracuse. Jeremy Kelly scored the only goal of the game in the 32nd minute as the ninth-seeded Tar Heels advanced to the Quarterfinals where they will face unranked surprise package Providence this Friday, Dec. 2 at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Friars clinched a Quarterfinal showdown with North Carolina after topping Bryce Gibson’s Creighton by a 2-1 scoreline on Saturday. Gibson did not feature as Providence came from behind to continue their remarkable run in the NCAA Tournament that has already seen them knock off No. 1 ranked Maryland in the Second Round.

Krutz and 13th-seed Notre Dame suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of No. 4 ranked Louisville on Sunday. The game was finely poised in a 1-1 deadlock heading into the final 20 minutes, but the Cardinals tallied twice in the closing stages to clinch a spot in the Quarterfinals for the first time since 2012. Krutz did not play in the defeat.
