The Lions went on to be crowned USL PRO champions with a penalty kick shootout victory in the finals.

Coached by Adrian Heath, Orlando City SC features several former MLS players, including Kyle Davies, Jamie Watson and Matt Luzunaris, as well as English Premier League veteran James O’Connor. Anthony Pulis, son of Stoke City FC Manager Tony Pulis, and John Rooney, younger brother of Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, are also among the team’s active roster.

The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest annual team tournament in American sports history with origins in 1914 and is named after Lamar Hunt, the original founder of Sporting Kansas City. Sporting Kansas City won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2004, defeating the Chicago Fire 1-0 on a golden goal by striker Igor Simutenkov at Arrowhead Stadium.
