Sporting KC forward Daniel Salloi makes Hungary U-21 debut in 2-2 draw with Sweden

Daniel Salloi - Sporting KC vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC - September 30, 2017

Sporting Kansas City forward Daniel Salloi earned his debut for the Hungary U-21 Men's National Team on Friday, starting and playing 75 minutes in a 2-2 draw against Sweden at Szusza Ferenc Stadion in Budapest.

Salloi and the Magyars took a two-goal lead in the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier before Sweden struck late in either half to salvage a draw. The Hungary U-21s will continue their qualifying campaign Tuesday when they travel to face Cyprus at AEK Arena in Larnaca.

Making his first international appearance of 2017 after a successful club campaign with Sporting KC, Salloi was thrust straight into the starting lineup and helped Hungary take a 1-0 lead on 17 minutes. His deflected effort near the penalty spot rolled into the path of Bence Biro, whose low strike nestled into the back of the net. Biro's brace was secured just a minute later when he finished from a tight angle to double Hungary's advantage.

Sweden's Gustav Engvall pulled a goal back in the 44th minute before Jordan Larsson equalized in the 85th minute to deny Hungary three points in the Group 6 matchup.

Salloi’s U-21 debut continues a breakout year for the forward who scored six times in 27 appearances for Sporting KC in 2017. He tallied three goals in the MLS regular season and added three more in Sporting KC’s run to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title, including the game-winning strike in the final against the New York Red Bulls on Sept. 20.
