Ahead of Sporting Kansas City’s 2022 MLS regular season home opener against Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday, Sporting KC manager and sporting director Peter Vermes talked with Soren Petro on The Program on Sports Radio 810.
On The Program, Vermes began the show talking about the offseason and building the roster. The Sporting KC boss talked about the difficulty in building the roster with international players getting visas, how soon the roster will be fully ready and how the team is going to play through any difficulties. The conversation then switched onto the topic of the current style of play and how Vermes plans to plug various players into certain roles.
Next, the two discussed making playoff runs and finding a balance between winning in the regular season and having enough left in the tank for an MLS Cup Playoff run. The conversation then turned into the way Sporting plays, and how it comes with a higher intensity than Vermes was used to when he played in MLS.
Petro and Vermes then talked at length about getting the most out of players in every match and making sure that the effort is always there. Vermes mentioned the idea that every sub gives Sporting a chance to win and that they are putting the team in a position to win with every move.
The Program concluded with a brief recap of last Sunday's match in Atlanta, a preview of a revamped Houston Dynamo team looking to improve upon their 2021 last-place finish in the Western Conference and Petro's Final Four questions which ranged from Vermes' favorite stadiums other than Children's Mercy Park to his favorite seafood.
