The United States has submitted its preliminary roster for the 2020 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament in Mexico.
Among the 48 players on the preliminary U.S. squad is Sporting Kansas City's new No. 10, midfielder Gianluca Busio. This marks the first time the 18-year-old Sporting KC Academy product has been selected to a preliminary U.S. squad for an international tournament at the U-23 level.
No later than March 8, all eight teams competing in Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying must confirm their final 20-player roster. To view the United States' preliminary roster, click here. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1997, are eligible to compete in the competition.
Busio is in the running to feature in the 15th edition of the Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament, which will take place in Guadalajara from March 18-30. The two tournament finalists will not only contend for a championship but clinch a berth at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in July and August.
Led by U-23 head coach Jason Kreis, the United States has been drawn into a challenging Group A alongside Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and archrivals Mexico. The top two finishers in Groups A and B will advance to the semifinals, scheduled for March 28. The semifinal winners will progress to the tournament final on March 30 and punch their ticket to the Summer Olympics in Japan. The U.S. is looking to qualify for the Summer Olympics for the first time since 2008.
