Sporting Kansas City selected former Chicago Fire goalkeeper Alec Kann in Stage One of the 2015 MLS Re-Entry Draft, the club announced on Friday.
Kann, 25, spent most of the 2015 season with Chicago’s USL affiliate Saint Louis FC, recording 74 saves in 19 matches during the team’s inaugural campaign. He finished with a 76.3 save percentage, third best in the USL, before making six saves in his MLS debut on Oct. 25 against the New York Red Bulls.
"We are fortunate to be able to add another promising goalkeeper to our team," Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes said. "We are confident Alec will come in and help push the level of competition within our group."
A native of Decatur, Georgia, Kann joined Chicago ahead of the 2013 season from USL side Charleston Battery, where he began his professional career in 2012. The 6-foot-4 goalkeeper was loaned to the USL’s Charlotte Eagles in 2014 and made 57 saves across 17 appearances for the club.
A four-year starter at Furman University, Kann posted a 37-16-10 record with 18 shutouts and a 1.00 goals against average in 65 starts during his college career. As a senior in 2011, he earned NSCAA All-South Region honors, All-Southern Conference honors and NSCAA Scholar All-America accolades after leading Furman to a 14-4-4 record and an NCAA Tournament berth.
