Sporting KC Show Podcast: Guest Brian Dunseth talks #RSLvSKC on Decision Day

Tim Melia - Sporting KC vs Real Salt Lake - July 22, 2020

Running throughout the season on Sports Radio 810 WHB, the Sporting Kansas City Show is available on several podcast hubs including Spotify and iTunes as well as SportingKC.com/SportingKCShow. With Nate Bukaty, Carter Augustine and Aly Trost hosting the weekly program, Sporting fans have a place to go to catch up on club storylines, guest interviews and more.

SiriusXM FC pundit and longtime Real Salt Lake voice Brian Dunseth joined a new edition of the Sporting Kansas City Show on Sports Radio 810 WHB last night to discuss Sunday's regular season finale between Sporting and RSL along with co-hosts Carter Augustine, Nate Bukaty and Aly Trost.

Dunseth, a Real Salt Lake broadcaster since 2006, shared his thoughts on numerous timely topics, including the #RSLvSKC rivalry.

"There's such an identifiable style of play when these two teams meet," Dunseth said. "It's tough tackling. It's some really fun, athletic players and some really intelligent players. There's a technical side of the game that's always fun to watch."

Dunseth also touched on the reversal of fortunes between Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City in 2020. A year ago, RSL finished third in the West while SKC was in 11th place. Now, Sporting Kansas City sits second in the conference and Real Salt Lake has slipped to 11th.

"For Sporting Kansas City fans, you look at RSL this year and it's similar to what Sporting Kansas City was dealing with last year."

Off the field, Real Salt Lake's season was punctuated by owner Dell Loy Hansen announcing plans to sell the club in August. Dunseth cited Kansas City as a "perfect example" for the ownership qualities needed to be successful in Major League Soccer.

"Local ownership. Deep pockets. Committed to the community. Committed to the team. Putting people in place and leaving them alone to succeed. Seeing the evolution of the team and the fan base," Dunseth said. "That's what RSL fans are hoping they get."

One bright spot for Real Salt Lake in 2020 has come from the contributions of the club's Homegrown Players. In fact, RSL leads the league in minutes played by active Homegrown Players for their club (as designated on team rosters by MLS).

Corey Baird, Justen Glad, Aaron Herrera and Donny Toia have all logged major minutes this year, and Dunseth speculated that 19-year-old Homegrown goalkeeper David Ochoa could be in line for his highly-anticipated MLS debut on Sunday.
