Two days after burying the match-winning penalty kick in a dramatic shootout against Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the MLS is Back Tournament Round of 16, Academy product Gianluca Busio joined a jam-packed episode of the Sporting Kansas City Show on Tuesday night to reflect on his team's recent success and preview a tantalizing quarterfinal showdown against the Philadelphia Union on Thursday.
Busio, 18, has featured in all six matches for Sporting this season, including four appearances at the MLS is Back Tournament. He came off the bench Sunday against Vancouver in a game that ended 0-0 despite Sporting's dominance to the tune of a club-record 36 shot attempts. Goalkeeper Tim Melia delivered the goods in the shootout, saving two Vancouver penalty attempts, and set the stage for Busio to dispatch the decisive spot kick that fired Sporting through to the quarterfinals.
Considered one of the best teenage players in American soccer, Busio figures to have an important role going forward as Manager Peter Vermes' side pursues a 2021 Concacaf Champions League berth and the lion's share of a $1.1 million prize pool that goes to the champion of the competition.
Sporting and Philadelphia will square off at 7 p.m. CT Thursday with live coverage on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, the ESPN app, Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM. Sporting Kansas City Show hosts Nate Bukaty, Carter Augustine and Aly Trost lay out a comprehensive preview of the contest following the interview with Busio in the video above.
