Sporting Kansas City will begin the club’s participation in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the Round of 32 by hosting FC Dallas at 7:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday, May 10 at Children's Mercy Park live on ESPN+. Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. CT on Monday, April 25 via SeatGeek and are included in all Sporting Kansas City Season Ticket Member packages.
U.S. Soccer conducted the Round of 32 draw today, confirming the matchups and hosts for the next round of the 107th edition of the competition. Sporting KC is 9-1-1 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 and will be one of 21 MLS clubs in the field along with five USL Championship teams and six sides representing leagues in the third division of American soccer. Open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer, the 2022 U.S. Open Cup features the largest field in the competition’s modern era (1995-present) with 103 clubs from all levels of American soccer. U.S. Soccer’s national championship will crown a champion in September after eight rounds of single-elimination play.

After Sporting first hosts FC Dallas on April 30 in the MLS regular season, Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas will meet again 10 days later in the U.S. Open Cup. The match-up will mark the fifth all-time meeting between the two sides in the competition with Sporting KC winning each of the previous four encounters in 2004, 2015, 2017 and 2018.
FC Dallas, two-time U.S. Open Cup champions with titles in 1997 and 2016, are currently in fourth place in the Western Conference with only one loss in 2022 and advanced to the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 with a 2-1 home win over FC Tulsa on Tuesday in the tournament’s Third Round. Led by first-year head coach Nico Estevez, FC Dallas’ roster features current MLS Golden Boot leader and United States Men’s National Team forward Jesus Ferreira.
The winner of the 2022 U.S. Open Cup will receive $300,000 in prize money, a berth in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League and have its name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy. Sporting KC owns four U.S. Open Cup titles in team history – tied for the most among MLS clubs – as champions in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017.
The U.S. Open Cup, named in honor of former Kansas City Wizards owner Lamar Hunt, has been contested since 1914, however was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic. New in 2022, the foreign-player limit for professional teams is no longer in place and all players on a team’s official league roster are eligible for selection to the 18-player game day roster for U.S. Open Cup matches.
