Sporting KC U-17s and U-15s to kick off Generation adidas Cup qualifying this weekend at Swope Soccer Village

The Sporting Kansas City Academy U-17s and U-15s will take the field this week for the start of 2019-20 Generation adidas Cup qualifying, playing three matches each at Swope Soccer Village between Friday and Monday.

The Generation adidas Cup, now in its 13th edition, is one of the premier competitive youth soccer tournaments in North America. Swope Soccer Village will host six heralded MLS academies this weekend—namely Sporting, Chicago Fire, LA Galaxy, Minnesota United FC, San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders FC—as regional qualifying kicks off in four locations across the United States and Canada. All matches will be free of admission and open to the public.

The 2019-20 Generation adidas Cup begins at the qualifying stage with 25 MLS academies split across four groups at the U-17 level. The U-15 division will consist of 24 teams in six groups. Three qualifying matches will be played this weekend, with three more scheduled for President’s Day weekend in 2020.

In the U-17 division, the top two teams from each group will advance to play in Division 1 of the 2020 Generation adidas Cup Finals next spring at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas. The third and fourth placed teams from each group will play in Division 2 and the remaining teams will play in Division 3.

In the U-15 division, the four group winners will advance to the aforementioned event in Frisco to compete in an eight-team international challenge.

The group stage will see teams earn three points for a regulation win, two points for a penalty shootout win, one point for a shootout loss and zero points for a regulation defeat.
