Sporting Kansas City took a 3-2 loss at the New York Red Bulls on Saturday and will look to bounce back when the club continues its defense of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title against rivals Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night. The quarterfinal matchup will kick off at 7:30 p.m. CT at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston and stream live on SportingKC.com. Manager Peter Vermes' men are the reigning Open Cup champions, having won the prestigious tournament three times since 2012.
Prior to kickoff, a new episode of The Sporting KC Show will air at 6 p.m. CT Wednesday with hosts Nate Bukaty and Carter Augustine. The duo will recap a busy weekend of MLS action, reflect on a thrilling 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and preview the Open Cup quarterfinal between Sporting KC and Houston.
All fans are welcome to the official watch party for Wednesday's game at No Other Pub in the Kansas City Power & Light District (1370 Grand Blvd.). From 7 p.m. CT until the final whistle, No Other Pub will offer $2 off all appetizers, $4 Bud Light drafts, $5 Corona cans and $6 Till Vodka cocktails.
Should Sporting KC prevail against Houston, the club will be placed in Thursday's U.S. Open Cup semifinal draw, which will determine matchups and hosts for both semifinal matches as well as hosting priorities for the U.S. Open Cup Final. If Sporting KC hosts a semifinal, tickets for said match will be included in Season Ticket Member Packages and go on sale via SeatGeek.com at 10 a.m. CT Friday.
Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia and defender Ike Opara are nominated for Best MLS Player at the 2018 ESPYS, which will air Wednesday on ABC. ESPY award fan voting is still open and all categories will close when the live show starts at 7 p.m. CT Wednesday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Wednesday is the deadline for media members to to apply for credentials to the 2018 Tournament of Nations doubleheader featuring the U.S. Women's National Team on July 26 at Children's Mercy Park. Media members can click here to access the online application. The three-time World Cup champion U.S. WNT will face Japan at 6 p.m. CT on the opening matchday of the high-profile, four-team tournament. The first match of the day will feature Brazil against Australia at 3:15 p.m. CT. Tickets for the doubleheader are now available at Ticketmaster.com.
The Rangers (9-6-4, 31 points) will play two home games this week at Children's Mercy Park, beginning with Wednesday's matchup against Orange County SC (10-6-3, 33 points) at 7:30 p.m. CT. Tickets are available at SeatGeek.com and the first 500 fans in attendance will receive free USA Rangers socks. Head coach Paulo Nagamura's team will then host Rio Grande Valley FC (2-6-10, 16 points) at 4 p.m. CT Sunday (tickets). Both Rangers matches will stream live on ESPN+.
Sporting Fields + Athletics is offering free pickup soccer Thursday from 6-8 p.m. CT at Wyandotte Sporting Fields for players age 18 and up. The open summer league will feature 5-v-5 games taking place on Field 6 at Wyandotte Sporting Fields (1500 N. 19th St., Kansas City, KS). For more information, visit SportingAthletics.com.
Beginning at 6 p.m. CT Thursday, FOX Sports Kansas City will air a Sporting KC marathon consisting of four straight MLS matches from the 2018 season. The marathon starts with the 6-0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 20, followed by the 3-2 win over Houston on June 23, the 4-3 win over Chicago Fire on March 10 and the 2-0 win over Atlanta United FC on May 9.
