Sporting Kansas City (8-2-4, 28 points) kept hold of first place in the Western Conference with a dominant 4-1 win over Minnesota United FC on Sunday night at Children's Mercy Park. Manager Peter Vermes' men now embark on a two-game road trip that will see the club battle in two separate competitions.
At 9 p.m. CT Wednesday, Sporting KC will begin their defense of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when they meet rivals Real Salt Lake in the Fourth Round at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Streaming details for the round of 32 matchup will be announced in the near term. Sporting KC owns four U.S. Open Cup titles, tied for the most all-time among MLS clubs, having hoisted the trophy in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017.
After dueling Real Salt Lake, Sporting KC will travel further west for the resumption of the MLS regular season with a Saturday night showdown against the Portland Timbers (6-3-3, 21 points). Kickoff at Providence Park is slated for 9:30 p.m. CT, with three hours of live television coverage starting at 9 p.m. CT on FOX Sports Kansas City, FOX Sports Midwest Plus and FOX Sports GO. Local radio broadcasts will also air on Sports Radio 810 WHB (English) and ESPN Deportes KC 1480 AM (Spanish), with The Final Whistle postgame show airing immediately after the match on 810 WHB.
Supporters are invited to attend official watch parties for both Sporting KC away games this week at No Other Pub in the Kansas City Power & Light District, with food and drink specials beginning 30 minutes before kickoff on both Wednesday and Saturday.
The official draw for the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 will take place on Thursday, dividing all Fourth Round winners geographically into groups of four (regardless of league affiliation). A random draw will then determine the pairings within each group, resulting in a fixed bracket for the remainder of the tournament. Should Sporting KC advance past Real Salt Lake and receive hosting rights for the Round of 16, tickets for the match will be included in Sporting KC Season Ticket Member Packages and single-game tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. CT Friday via SeatGeek.com.
Single-game tickets to Sporting KC's final seven home matches of the 2018 MLS season are now on sale to the general public via SeatGeek.com. The seven-game set that rounds out Sporting KC's 2018 home schedule begins July 28 with a visit from FC Dallas and includes high-profile fixtures against the Portland Timbers (Aug. 18), Orlando City SC (Sept. 8), LA Galaxy (Oct. 6) and Los Angeles Football Club (Oct. 28). The Swope Park Rangers (5-3-4, 19 points) slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Saint Louis FC on Saturday at Toyota Stadium in Fenton, Missouri. Head coach Paulo Nagamura's men will now prepare for their second straight road test on Saturday when they travel to face Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (5-7-2, 17 points) at Weidner Field. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. CT and stream live on ESPN+.
