Resurgent Sporting Kansas City (10-11-7, 37 points) claimed a third consecutive win on Saturday as Johnny Russell scored early in a 1-0 defeat of rivals Houston Dynamo. Manager Peter Vermes' men will continue their playoff push this Saturday when they visit the eighth-place Portland Timbers (12-11-4, 40 points) in a monumental Western Conference clash at Providence Park.
Kickoff in Portland is slated for 9:30 p.m. CT with live coverage on FOX Sports Kansas City, FOX Sports Midwest Plus and FOX Sports GO. Supporters are invited to the game's official watch party at No Other Pub (1370 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO) in the Power & Light District, which will offer a variety of food and drink specials from 9 p.m. CT until the full-time whistle.
Six Sporting players have joined their respective national teams this week during the FIFA international window. Hungarian duo Botond Barath and Krisztian Nemeth, Liechtenstein defender Nico Hasler and Scotland forward Johnny Russell have ventured to Europe for the resumption of UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying, midfielder Felipe Gutierrez has joined Chile for a pair of friendly matches, and Sporting KC Academy product Gianluca Busio has joined the United States U-17 Men's National Team for the 4 Nations Tournament in Assen, Netherlands.
Barath, Nemeth and Hungary will travel to face Montenegro in a Thursday friendly at Podgorica City Stadium in Podgorica (1:45 p.m. CT, ESPN3, ESPN app) before continuing their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign next Monday when they host Slovakia. Hasler and Liechtenstein will hit the road for two Euro qualifiers this week, visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday at Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica (1:45 p.m. CT, ESPN3, ESPN app) and Greece on Sunday at Olympic Stadium in Athens (1:45 p.m. CT, ESPN3, ESPN app). Russell and Scotland will host a Euro qualifier against Russia on Friday at Hampden Park in Glasgow (1:45 p.m. CT, ESPN3, ESPN app) before welcoming top-ranked Belgium next Monday.
Busio is also set to compete in Europe, with the USA U-17s battling Mexico at 11:30 a.m. CT on Thursday and the Netherlands at 8 a.m. CT on Saturday. Both games will take place at Sportpark Marsdijk in Assen. Lastly, Gutierrez and Chile will take the field here in the U.S., locking horns with South American rivals Argentina at 9 p.m. CT Thursday at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (ESPN Deportes, ESPN app).
A new episode of The Sporting KC Show Podcast will debut Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT on Sports Radio 810 WHB. Hosts Nate Bukaty and Carter Augustine will discuss last weekend's big win over Houston, recap a busy slate of MLS action and preview Saturday's battle against Portland.
The Swope Park Rangers (3-15-6, 15 points) will continue their USL Championship campaign on Saturday, visiting Memphis 901 FC (5-13-7, 22 points) at AutoZone Park. The Eastern Conference matchup will kick off at 7 p.m. CT and stream live on ESPN Plus.
