Should Sporting Kansas City advance to the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals, LIVESTRONG Sporting Park will host the match at 7:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday, June 26. Sporting KC faces the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday in the fourth round of the tournament and would face the winner between the Michigan Bucks (PDL) and Dayton Dutch Lions (USL PRO) in the next round. If necessary, single-game tickets for the quarterfinal fixture will go on sale immediately following the fourth round match on Tuesday.
U.S. Soccer announced the possible pairings and locations for the quarterfinals on Saturday. Match-ups are based on a geographic basis when feasible and hosts are determined by random selection among clubs who have applied to host and meet minimum venue requirements.
Sporting Kansas City began the tournament with a 3-2 win over Orlando City SC last week and advanced to host the Rapids at 7:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday. Colorado were 3-1 winners over the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the third round and will face Sporting KC for the second time this season, after drawing 2-2 in MLS play last month.
Tickets, starting as low as $13, are currently on sale for the match and can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com or at the LSP Box Offices. All Sporting Kansas City Season Ticket Members will receive a ticket to the June 5 match at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, as well as the June 26 quarterfinal if necessary, as part of their season ticket package.
The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest annual team tournament in American sports history with origins in 1914 and is named after Lamar Hunt, the original founder of Sporting Kansas City. The tournament celebrates its 99th annual edition in 2012 with the largest field in tournament history, consisting of 32 amateur teams and 32 professional clubs.
Sporting Kansas City won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2004, defeating the Chicago Fire 1-0 on a golden goal by striker Igor Simutenkov at Arrowhead Stadium.
