Sporting's Champions League win latest in recent upturn vs. Liga MX

In the longtime rivalry between MLS and Liga MX, MLS clubs may be gaining ground.

Sporting Kansas City's first-leg win over Toluca was Major League Soccer's seventh victory in the last 13 head-to-head matches against Mexican clubs in the Concacaf Champions League over the last two editions of the tournament, and one of the biggest in the history of the rivalry.

MLS clubs have compiled a 7W-4L-2D record against Liga MX teams dating back to last year's tournament, as compared with a meager 1W-8L-7D record in the three prior editions (2014-2017).

The big one continues to elude MLS, however. MLS clubs have come face to face against Liga MX opponents in the Champions League final on three occasions, and all three times it was a narrow loss for the MLS side.

Monterrey edged Real Salt Lake 3-2 on aggregate goals in the 2010-11 final. Club América needed a comeback at Olympic Stadium in the 2014-15 edition to beat out the Montreal Impact for the trophy, 5-3 on aggregate. And Toronto FC dropped a heartbreaking penalty-kick shootout in the 2018 final against Chivas Guadalajara after the teams finished even on aggregate goals 3-3.
