2019 Big 12 Soccer Championship - Quarterfinal Match-Ups
No. 1 Oklahoma State vs. No. 8 Oklahoma
After finishing ninth in the Big 12 a year ago, Oklahoma State (14-1-3) claimed their fourth Big 12 regular season title as the conference’s top scoring team with 45 goals in 18 games. The Cowgirls, No. 12 in the nation and riding a seven-game winning streak, will face in-state rivals Oklahoma (8-8-3) for the second time in 10 days.
No. 4 West Virginia vs. No. 5 Kansas
West Virginia (10-6-2) have won four of the six Big 12 Championships at Swope Soccer Village and enter as the reigning tournament champions. The Mountaineers, who played the toughest schedule of any Big 12 team this year, are the only Big 12 team to appear in College Cup (2016) and will look to lock up a 20th straight NCAA tournament berth. Kansas (12-4-3) are ranked No. 25 in the nation and enter on a six-game unbeaten run. Lee’s Summit native Sarah Peters, one of four Jayhawks from the Kansas City area, leads all Big 12 goalkeepers with seven shutouts.
No. 2 Texas Tech vs. No. 7 Baylor
Texas Tech (14-2-2), ranked No. 15 in the nation, boasts the Big 12’s top goal scorer in Kirsten Davis with 15 goals on the campaign, while the Red Raiders defense led the conference with only 11 goals allowed in 18 games. Baylor (8-7-3), led by reigning Big 12 Coach of the Year Paul Jobson, won last year’s Big 12 regular season title and reached the NCAA tournament quarterfinals. Sunday will be a rematch of last year’s Big 12 Championship semifinal and features two teams that have lifted the Big 12 Championship trophy in Kansas City as Texas Tech were champions in 2015 and Baylor captured the crown in 2017.
No. 3 Texas vs. No. 6 TCU
Sunday’s match-up features last year’s Big 12 Co-Freshmen of the Year in Texas midfielder Julia Grosso and TCU forward Messiah Bright. Grosso, a member of Canada’s squad at the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer, is joined at Texas (11-7-0) by forward Cyera Hintzen, last year’s Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. TCU (10-6-2) has played in the NCAA tournament each of the last three seasons and goalkeeper Emily Alvarado leads the Big 12 with 74 saves.
