#TBT: Sporting KC makes third trip to Minnesota

Benny Feilhaber - Sporting KC at Minnesota United FC - June 15, 2016

Sporting Kansas City heads north this weekend to take on expansion side Minnesota United FC(12:30pm, FS1). It will be the first meeting between the two sides in MLS competition. Sporting KC has played Minnesota United in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and also played the Minnesota Thunder twice in the domestic competition.

The two sides met last year in Blaine with Sporting KC earning a 2-1 win in the fourth round of the Open Cup. The only other time Sporting KC played a competitive match in the North Star State was in 2009 when they were still known as the Wizards. It was an exciting affair that featured six goals including two in AET. Kansas City defeated the Thunder 4-2 on penalty kicks with Claudio Lopez, Abe Thompson, Josh Wolff and Herculez Gomez converting in the shootout.

Unfortunately, we could not find highlights from the 2009 Open Cup match, but to get you ready for Sunday's match, check out highlights from our 2-1 win over Minnesota last year.
