Forwards Dom Dwyer and Jacob Peterson powered Sporting Kansas City to a comprehensive 3-0 win over Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday at Children's Mercy Park.
Dwyer netted a brace, could have scored a third if only for a phenomenal save from Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei, and wreaked continuous havoc on a Seattle side that was overwhelmed and outclassed from beginning to end. The English striker, who tallied a game-high six shots and created three scoring chances, was justly rewarded on Monday with a spot on the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week.
A fifth-year MLS veteran, Dwyer made club history on Sunday by becoming the third Sporting Kansas City player to reach double-digit goals in three separate regular seasons. The others to do so? Preki and Josh Wolff. Dwyer also notched his eighth career multi-goal game, tied with Digital Takawira for most in Kansas City's regular season record books.
Peterson delivered a tireless performance of his own, scoring one of the best goals of Sporting Kansas City's 2016 season. His right-footed blast in first-half stoppage time nestled perfectly into the upper left corner and effectively sealed a victory in which Sporting KC limited Seattle to one shot attempt, an all-time MLS low. The 30-year-old ran rampant down the right flank all afternoon and nearly had the first multi-goal game of his MLS career, but dragged a 67th-minute effort inches wide of the post. Peterson landed Bleacher Report MLS Team of the Week honors for a strong shift that ended in the 76th minute with the introduction of debutant Cameron Porter.
Winners of four straight at Children's Mercy Park, Sporting Kansas City looks to continue their sensational home form Sunday when the club hosts reigning MLS Cup champion Portland Timbers at 1 p.m. sharp.
