Sporting Kansas City returned to winning ways on Saturday, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Real Salt Lake in a match that saw winger Gerso and defender Graham Zusi shine.
The duo earned MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week honors for Week 9 on Monday for their roles in a win that lifted Sporting Kansas City to second place in the Western Conference ahead of Wednesday’s home tilt with the New York Red Bulls.
In addition to finding the back of the net in second-half stoppage time, Gerso led all players Saturday night with eight duels won and four successful dribbles. He also created a scoring chance in the 11th minute as Sporting Kansas City largely controlled proceedings from beginning to end.
Zusi — who also landed Team of the Week honors from Goal.com — recorded the 50th assist of his MLS regular season career when Benny Feilhaber fired Sporting Kansas City ahead in the 17th minute. The right back completed 41 of his 44 passes and carved out another scoring opportunity three minutes later, teeing up Gerso for an open shot that was saved.
Manager Peter Vermes’ men return to Children’s Mercy Park on Wednesday for an interconference clash with the New York Red Bulls.
