Major League Soccer (MLS) and adidas announced today the official unveil of the adidas x MLS Archive Collection which includes the club's highly-anticipated third jersey featuring the Kansas City Wizards logo and colors in tribute to the iconic uniforms from the team's early era.
Items from the adidas x MLS Archive Collection -- including adidas Originals jackets and adidas Gazelle shoes -- are available to order online at SportingStyle.com and MLSstore.com while supplies last.
Sporting Kansas City will wear the third jersey during select matches throughout the remainder of the 2024 season, beginning on Wednesday night when the club plays back-to-back Canadian Championship winners Vancouver Whitecaps FC with kickoff at 9:30 p.m. CT live on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
Limited quantities of the new Sporting Kansas City jerseys and jackets will be available to purchase at the club's VANvSKC watch party on Wednesday in The Atrium at J. Rieger & Co. (2700 Guinotte Ave.) in Kansas City, Mo. The event will feature a live DJ and happy hour pricing on drinks from 8:30 p.m. CT until final whistle.
Fans are also encouraged to follow Sporting Kansas City's official social media channels for an opportunity to shop the collection at Children's Mercy Park later this week in advance of the club's upcoming home match against arch rivals St. Louis CITY SC at 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.
In addition, SportingStyle will release many more throwback items later in the year -- including Sporting Kansas City's Retro Night on Aug. 24 and during the holiday shopping season -- to continue the celebration of the club's proud history as a charter member of Major League Soccer since the inaugural season in 1996.
Sporting Kansas City is one of five clubs who are a part of the first year of the adidas x MLS Archive Collection along with Inter Miami CF, LA Galaxy, LAFC and Portland Timbers. The collection leans into a retro theme of each club’s city that captures authentic stories important to the local community through bold and progressive designs,
“Third jerseys are always a favorite amongst our passionate fan base, and we couldn’t be more excited to officially announce the first year of the adidas x MLS Archive Collection,” said Rachel Hoagland, MLS SVP of Consumer Products. “This collection is a modern take on U.S. soccer nostalgia, and exemplifies the League’s commitment to honoring the unique heritages that exist across our various clubs.”
Drawing on the nostalgic look of sports broadcasting, advertising, magazines and catalogs, the adidas x MLS Archive Collection combines different visual languages to create a unique narrative for each club. By celebrating the past while also staying relevant to the next generation of fans, the adidas x MLS Archive Collection isn’t just a throwback. The vintage aesthetic and authentic details pay homage to the greatness that never fades across MLS.
“We know soccer fans are passionate about jerseys and apparel, so we’re excited to launch this Archive Collection in partnership with MLS,” said Edward Martinez, adidas Senior Manager of Sports Marketing, Soccer. “It was important for us to really hone in on design elements that were specifically tailored to team and city. We think these jerseys are a tremendous way to connect our MLS fanbase to throwback culture in an authentic way, and this is just the beginning – we can’t wait to show fans how this Collection evolves in future years.”
MLS is also announcing its partnership with renowned fashion stylist Courtney Mays. Known for styling some of the biggest sports stars, through this partnership Mays is showing how fans can wear their favorite jerseys anywhere, anytime. Showcasing that jerseys are not just for match day, Mays’ styled looks represent how fans can wear their jerseys in all situations and showcase how jerseys are truly the most versatile item in a closet.
“I’ve always been an advocate of sport being a way to communicate style, so this partnership with MLS was a fun way for me to show how attainable it is to incorporate your favorite jerseys into your everyday wardrobe in a fashionable way,” said Mays “My background is in the basketball space, so when I got the opportunity to collaborate with MLS, I was thrilled to explore other avenues of the intersection between sport and fashion.”
