Sporting has advanced to the quarterfinal stage of the Concacaf Champions League for the second time after claiming a 5-0 aggregate victory over Deportivo Toluca FC in the Round of 16. The result made Sporting the first American club in the 57-year history of the Champions League to defeat a Mexican club in a two-legged series with the second leg played in Mexico. It also marked the largest margin of victory by an MLS team over a Liga MX opponent in a two-legged series.
Manager Peter Vermes’ side is looking to become the first Major League Soccer team to win the Concacaf Champions League since the tournament’s modern era began in 2008. Their quarterfinal opponent in North America’s premier club competition is Independiente, a Panamanian outfit making its Champions League debut. Independiente earned a stunning 5-1 aggregate win over Canadian giants Toronto FC in the Round of 16, including a 4-0 first-leg win at Estadio Agustin Sanchez on Feb. 19.
2019 Concacaf Champions League Bracket
The Concacaf Champions League involves the best teams from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. The 11th edition of the prestigious championship features a two-legged, home-and-away format with a fixed bracket from the Round of 16 through the Finals. Quarterfinal fixtures are slated for March 5-6 and March 12-14.
Sporting are one of four MLS teams remaining in the 2019 competition alongside Atlanta United FC, the Houston Dynamo and the New York Red Bulls. They join Independiente and three Liga MX clubs—Monterrey, Santos Laguna and Tigres UANL—in the quarterfinal field. Liga MX clubs have won all 10 Champions League titles during the modern era.
Coming off a record-breaking MLS campaign that saw the club finish atop the 2018 Western Conference regular season standings, Sporting qualified for the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League as winners of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Independiente punched their ticket after posting the best record in the 2017-18 Liga Panamena de Futbol season.
Vermes first led Sporting to the Champions League Quarterfinals in 2014, when his side fell to eventual champion Cruz Azul. Sporting are making their fourth Champions League appearance, having exited in the group stage in 2014-15 and 2016-17.
