The Sporting Active Readers program launched in 2013 to help increase enthusiasm for reading through the beautiful game of soccer and is now integrated into schools across the Kansas City area.
Throughout this six-week program, 3rd-5th grade students meet once a week for a before-school class which includes 30 minutes of on-field soccer instruction followed by 30 minutes of reading and literacy instruction. As a reward for completing each week's homework, participants earn the opportunity to attend private Sporting KC training sessions at Swope Soccer Village.
