Sporting Kansas City Academy U-15 Team Argyle won the 2016 U.S. Youth Futsal National Championship on Monday with a 5-2 victory over Team X 01 (Texas) at New Century Fieldhouse in New Century, Kansas.
The U.S. Youth Futsal National Championships featured 128 teams from 22 different states playing for titles at U-9 through U-18 levels this weekend in New Century, with Sporting KC Academy teams competing in U-13, U-14, U-15, U-16 and U-18 age divisions.
Coached by former Sporting KC midfielder Josh Gardner, U-15 Team Argyle enjoyed the best finish among the Academy sides with a national title after going undefeated through five games. Stefan Freeman and Jonathan Munoz scored two goals each and Jotaro Koga added a fifth in Monday’s championship match.
Team Argyle’s road to the title began Friday with a 3-3 draw against Team X 01 — the same opponent it would face in the final. The team rounded out pool play with a pair of convincing wins, beating JOTP Santos 15-1 and Ginga Academy 11-1, en route to Sunday night’s semifinals. A 7-3 victory over Derby City Rovers Selecao punched Argyle’s ticket to the championship.
