UPDATE: After knocking out Stefan Frei in the semifinal round, Tim Melia is now a finalist for MLS Save of the Week. He is an early hole against the New England Revolution's Brad Knighton. Click on the poll below to vote! Voting runs through 10:55 p.m. CT tonight.
Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia made three saves in the club's 2-1 road win over the San Jose Earthquakes and two of those saves have been nominated for MLS Save of the Week.
The first nominee came only seconds into the game as Jordan Stewart whipped a cross to Sporting KC’s penalty spot. Melia dove off his line and punched the ball to the top of the 18-yard box and then quickly recovered to parry away Chris Wondolowski’s effort.
His second nominee also came seconds after a kickoff and was also against Wondolowski. Just twenty seconds into the second half, Alberto Quintero broke free down the right flank for the home side. He found a darting Wondolowski who re-directed Quintero’s cross at the six yard box. Melia, who was less than three yards away from the ball, did all he could to push the ball wide of the target and keep the U.S. international off the board.
Melia, who was voted AT&T Man of the Match by Sporting KC fans, was also honored this week as the goalkeeper on MLSsoccer.com’s Team of the Week. First Round voting runs through tonight at 10:55 p.m. CT.
