Just two names populated the Sporting Kansas City injury report on Thursday afternoon when the squad jetted out to the nation’s capital ahead of their MLS regular-season opener against D.C United at RFK Stadium on Saturday night.
Diego Rubio is the sole player listed as “out”, with the Chilean forward still sidelined after suffering a torn ACL in October of last year. Rubio had three goals in 20 appearances in 2016, all coming in different competitions as the 23-year-old became the first-ever player to score in MLS, U.S. Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League play in one season.
Joining Rubio, but only in the “questionable” category, is newly inked forward Cameron Iwasa. The Sacramento, California native battled a hamstring strain for much of preseason and ramped up his recovery this week. The 23-year-old joined Sporting KC from hometown club Sacramento Republic FC in January, having seen his 12 goals in the USL last season earn him USL All-League Second Team honors.
The only name listed on D.C. United’s injury report is 2017 MLS SuperDraft pick and former Maryland defender Chris Odoi-Atsem. The 12th overall pick is out with a bilateral calf injury as D.C. enters Saturday’s contest with a relatively clean bill of health.
Tonight's curtain raiser kicks off at 6 p.m. CT on FOX Sports Kansas City and the FOX Sports GO app, while fans can listen to live coverage in English on Sports Radio 810 WHB and in Spanish on La Grande 1340 AM.
